Google Search: Finding Definitions

Basic Syntax

Basically, there are two ways to find definitions with google:

  1. define term
  2. define:term

Explanation

term refers to the term you want to have defined. This can be a single word as well as a phrase.

  1. The first method performs a basic search for [ define term ] and shows the usual results. In addition, a definition of term is displayed on top of the search results.
  2. The second method doesn’t perform a basic query. It searchs for definitions of term in online dictionaries and displays those definitions only.

Examples

Suppose you want to know the definition of rock bottom. Here are the results of the two methods:

  1. define rock bottom

The result will look like this:
    Error: Couldn't find image.
Click on the image to display it in full size.

  2. define:rock bottom

You will get something like this:
    Error: Couldn't find image.
Click on the image to display it in full size.
